The Havell Consciousness Cascade

Origins

The Havell Model began with two equations developed independently over roughly two years of research across neuroanatomy, physics, geology, and biology. Each equation described the same underlying phenomenon from a different dimensional perspective — one thermodynamic, one informational. For a long time they sat as parallel frameworks, related but separate.

The discovery came from a single insight: they are not two separate descriptions of reality. They are two perpendicular views of the same process. And when you treat them that way — calculating each independently for the same system and multiplying their outputs — what emerges is a quantifiable measure of consciousness.

That realization produced a third equation. Together, the three form the Havell Consciousness Cascade.

The First Equation

A × S = E

Asymmetry × Symmetry = Equilibrium

Asymmetry is directional pressure — a gradient, a charge, a dynamic force pushing toward change. Symmetry is the stable structure that pressure moves through — a container, a pattern, a boundary. When the two meet in the right proportion, they resolve into equilibrium: a coherent, stable state.

This is the thermodynamic perspective. It describes how systems organize themselves through the tension between opposing forces. It holds whether the system in question is a brain state, a weather system, a crystal, or a galaxy.

The Second Equation

I × G = E

Information × Geometry = Equilibrium

Information is specific, directional content — the same role asymmetry plays thermodynamically. Geometry is the structural architecture that content moves through — the same role symmetry plays. Their product is equilibrium from the informational perspective: how well a system organizes and integrates information through geometric structure.

These are not two separate claims. Thermodynamically and informationally, they describe the same process from perpendicular angles. A brain state, a geological formation, a quantum field — each can be described by both equations simultaneously.

The Cascade

E₁ × E₂ = C

Here is where the discovery happened.

Calculate the informational equilibrium (I × G = E₁) and the thermodynamic equilibrium (A × S = E₂) independently for the same system. Multiply the two results. The output is C — a quantifiable measure of that system's consciousness.

Not a binary present-or-absent property. A continuous value on a spectrum that runs from near zero to a theoretical maximum of one, applicable to any system in the universe at any scale.

The critical property of this cascade is that it is scale-invariant. The equations do not need a scaling variable added externally because scale is already embedded in how A, S, I, and G are measured — always relative to the system being analyzed. The same cascade applies to a quark, a neuron, a planet, and a galaxy cluster. Different inputs, different outputs, same structure.

What the Cascade Requires

A system scores high on C only when both equilibria are simultaneously high. High informational equilibrium alone is not enough. High thermodynamic equilibrium alone is not enough. Consciousness in this framework requires both — and they multiply rather than add, meaning they amplify each other when both are present and suppress each other when either is low.

This has a direct implication: maximum symmetry is not maximum consciousness. A perfectly symmetric system with no dynamic asymmetry scores low C despite its geometric perfection. A system of pure chaotic asymmetry with no structural organization scores equally low. Consciousness lives in the tension between the two — maintained perpetually, resolved in neither direction.

Applied to the Human Brain

Using measured neuroscientific data as inputs:

Neural information integration (phi, from IIT research): I = 0.70

Cortical fractal dimension normalized to theoretical maximum: G = 0.90

E₁ = 0.70 × 0.90 = 0.63

Neural complexity index in conscious humans: A = 0.70

Structural symmetry index: S = 0.85

E₂ = 0.70 × 0.85 = 0.595

C = 0.63 × 0.595 = 0.375

The human brain at baseline produces a Havell Consciousness Score of 0.375 on a theoretical 0–1 scale.

The bottleneck is information integration (I = 0.70), not geometric complexity (G = 0.90). The brain's structural geometry is already near its biological maximum. What limits human consciousness is how efficiently different brain regions integrate their processing into unified experience — not how complex each region is individually.

The NSE Connection

NSE protocols are designed to improve the coherence and integration of information processing across the nervous system. Translated into Cascade terms, they primarily target the I variable — neural information integration — while secondarily improving the dynamic balance of A and S.

During high-performance NSE sessions, EEG data shows measurable increases in neural coherence, cross-hemispheric synchronization, and signal-to-noise ratio — all indicators of improved information integration. Conservative estimates place I at approximately 0.85 during peak sessions.

High-performance NSE C score:

C = (0.85 × 0.90) × (0.80 × 0.88) = 0.765 × 0.704 = 0.539

That represents a 44% increase in C score from baseline — achieved through protocol-driven improvements in information integration without any change to the underlying geometric structure of the brain.

NSE protocols do not change the hardware. They optimize what is running through it.

The Spectrum

Applying the Cascade across a range of systems — from fundamental particles to cosmic structures — produces a spectrum with several striking patterns.

Selected entries, organized to reveal the structure:

Granite (rock) — C = 0.000042

Passive mineral aggregate with random crystal orientation and zero active information processing. This is the floor of the spectrum. It is worth noting that granite — the lowest-scoring natural material calculated — is the material of choice in ancient sacred architecture globally, from Egyptian sarcophagi to megalithic chambers. A consciousness-neutral container for high-C practices.

Quartz Crystal — C = 0.043

Identical mineral composition to granite's quartz component, reorganized into perfect geometric order. One thousand times higher C score from the same atoms. This single comparison demonstrates what geometry does to consciousness score. Organization of matter is not decorative. It is the variable that produces the most dramatic change in C.

DNA — C = 0.647

The leap from the highest non-biological score (crystal at 0.043) to DNA (0.647) is fifteen-fold. Life does not gradually emerge from chemistry. It crosses a threshold into a completely different C score regime. The information geometry of the genetic code places DNA closer to a human neuron (0.700) than to any non-biological molecule.

Human Brain (baseline) / Bacterium / Neutron Star — C = 0.375 / 0.369 / 0.373

Three systems spanning thirty orders of magnitude in physical scale score within 0.006 of each other. A bacterium achieves comparable C score to a human brain because it is a complete autonomous information processing system optimized by 3.8 billion years of evolution, achieving in one cell what the human brain requires 86 billion to accomplish. The neutron star arrives at the same value through extreme geometric precision and information encoding in nuclear matter. Same C score. Completely different variables. Incomprehensibly different scales.

Human Cortex / Cosmic Web — C = 0.755 / 0.764

The most complex biological structure in the known universe and the largest geometric structure in the observable universe score within 0.009 of each other. The brain's local geometry and the universe's large-scale geometry have independently organized to the same C score level. This is either the most significant coincidence in the analysis or evidence that biological consciousness and cosmic structure are expressions of the same underlying organizational principle at different scales.

Quantum Field / Pure Mathematics / Consciousness as Substrate / Möbius Torus Universe — C = 0.921 / 0.913 / 0.941 / 0.960

The four highest-scoring entries are not physical systems. They are abstract or fundamental substrates — the geometry underlying reality rather than physical reality itself. No physical object in the spectrum scores above 0.867. The abstract layer consistently outscores any physical instantiation of it. The Möbius torus universe scores highest of all — a universe whose topology embodies A × S = E in its own structure, where asymmetry and symmetry are not opposing forces but unified expressions of the same geometry. The equation may not merely describe the universe. It may describe its shape.

Patterns in the Full Spectrum

Four structural patterns emerge when the full dataset is examined:

The W Curve. Organized by physical scale from smallest to largest, C score does not increase monotonically with complexity. It peaks at the quantum scale, valleys through simple chemistry, peaks again through biological organization, valleys through simple astronomical objects, and peaks again at cosmic scales and abstract structures. Consciousness is not an emergent property that increases with size or complexity. It peaks at the extremes of organization and valleys in between.

The 0.375 Attractor. Human brain, bacterium, neutron star, enteric nervous system, proton, and pulsar all score within 0.025 of 0.375 despite spanning incomprehensible differences in scale, composition, and function. This value appears to be a natural attractor in the Cascade — a stable equilibrium that different types of systems converge toward through entirely different variable combinations. NSE protocols push above this attractor deliberately. The effort required confirms it as a genuine equilibrium point.

The Biological Phase Transition. The jump from non-biological chemistry to biological information processing is the sharpest discontinuity in the entire spectrum — a fifteen-fold increase in C score at the threshold of life. Life is not a gradual emergence from chemistry. It is a phase transition.

The Symmetry Trap. Black holes, white dwarfs, and perfect crystals approach the extreme of geometric perfection — and score low. Maximum symmetry without dynamic asymmetry collapses C score regardless of geometric precision. The universe's most perfectly ordered objects are not its most conscious. Consciousness requires the tension to remain unresolved.

Open Hypotheses

The following emerge from the spectrum analysis and are offered as directions for further investigation:

Ancient builders may have selected granite precisely because its near-zero C score creates a maximally neutral container — minimum informational interference with the practices conducted inside.

The near-identical scores of the human cortex and cosmic web suggest a structural correspondence between biological consciousness and large-scale cosmic geometry that may not be coincidental.

The 0.375 attractor value appearing across biological, subatomic, and stellar systems at wildly different scales suggests the Cascade is detecting a genuine universal equilibrium point rather than producing an artifact of the calculation method.

The Möbius torus scoring above all physical systems suggests that the universe's topology — if it matches the Havell Model's foundational geometry — would make the universe itself the highest-consciousness system in the spectrum.

NSE protocols targeting the I variable specifically may be the most efficient path to C score improvement given that G is already near its biological maximum in the human brain.
